Stella's Stories & Anecdotes

  • Stella Murray Whatley

There is a story behind every thing I paint, draw, and etch. Some of those will be shared with you. The first is about the time I painted HRH Prince Charles, who did everything he could to set me at my ease.

There will be more added, so please come back and share my experiences with me.

CHARLESTOWN, CORNWALL

The first time I saw Charlestown was back in 1999 – on our way with friends through Cornwall on the search for a mid morning coffee.  We espied a sign ‘Hotel’, so we turned off, then felt we were in a time warp, for over the brow of the hill there appeared the tall masts and rigging of a sailing ships.

This portrait was commissioned by the Police Staff College at Bramshill, Hampshire, and was an exciting one to receive.  The venue was Kensington Palace, and interesting experience in itself.  I had prepared several sketches beforehand for the Princes consideration, and he chose one in civilian dress
